Your Library Card

Who can get a library card, how to apply, and how to use your library card.

  •  The Lacona Public Library will serve all residents of the City of Lacona, the SE Warren School District, and/or with a Lacona address. Service will not be denied or abridged because of religious, racial, social, economic, or political status; mental, emotional, or physical condition; age; or sexual orientation.
  • To apply for a Library Card: Patrons must fill out a registration form with name, address, and phone number if applicable, to receive a library card. Any one under 14 must have a parent or guardian sign their consent on the registration card before a library card will be issued.  A library card is necessary to check out items from the library.
  • How to use the library card
    • Books, Magazines, and Audio Books, and Computer Games may be checked out for 3 weeks.  Reference books are not to be checked out.  Videos and DVDs, with a few exceptions, may be checked out for 4 days.
    • Loan limits: There is no limit on the number of books a patron can borrow at one time, but they must be returned by the due date.  Videos and DVDs are limited to 3 per family.
    • Renewing items: An item may be renewed by phone or in person.  Brand new books, videos, or DVDs will only be renewed once.
    • Returning items:  A patron may leave the item/items at the library or put the item/items into the library dropbox located in front of the building.
    • Overdue fines and billing: Overdue books and audio booksare fined at 10 cents a day per item, up to $1.00.  Overdue videos & DVDs are fined at 25 cents a day per item, no maximum limit.  Any overdue fines must be paid before new items may be checked out.  The purpose of fines is to encourage patrons to be responsible in their library usage; and also to help pay the administrative costs of accounting for overdue items.
    • Lost & damaged materials:   It is the responsibility of the patron to maintain all items borrowed from the Library and see that they are returned in good condition.  The patron is responsible for replacement costs of any lost or damaged items.  Patrons who have lost or damaged materials shall be denied borrowing privileges until payment in full has been made.
    • Requesting an item: The Lacona Public Library participates in Interlibrary Loan (ILL) programs with the Regional Library and through SILO (State of Iowa Libraries on line).  A request for ILL must be made with the library director, giving as much pertinent information as possible.  At this time, there are no extra fees for this service.  When the material arrives, the person will be notified.  The librarian will tell the patron when the material is due back to the library.  It is responsibility of the patron to return the material on time so it can be mailed back to the lending institution. Overdue fees incurred because of negligence will be charged to the patron.
    • Reserving an item:  Items may be reserved in person or by telephone.  A list will be maintained and the next person on it will be notified when the item becomes available.
    • Open Access:  A person not in the Lacona Public Library district must have a valid card from another library to be able to check out items.
    • Use of the Library may be denied for due cause:  Such cause may be failure to return library materials or to pay penalities, destruction of library property, disturbance of other patrons, or any other illegal, disruptive, or objectionable conduct on library premises.
    • Confidentiality: All records of the Lacona Public Library are private.  Records can only be made public to a law officer or lawyer with the proper forms and can only be done by the Director or Board President.
